Throughput of Ukrainian ports down 20% to 43.2 mln t in Jan-May 09

In January-May 2009, the ports of Ukraine handled 43.2 million tonnes of cargo (-20%, year-on-year), Ukraine’s Ministry of Transport and Communications reports according to RZD-Partner. State ports have lost over 10 million tonnes of cargo during almost half a year.

Throughput decrease was demonstrated by the majority of states ports including the leading ones: from 10% in the port of Ijichevsk to 31% in Mariupol. The throughput of average ports continued to grow (Kerch and Kherson - by 1.6% and by 6% respectively), as well as that of minor ports (Ust-Danube – by 28%).

Transit transportation via ports of Ukraine totaled 16.2 million tonnes (-27.5%, year-on-year) with only 2 ports having demonstrated the growth: Kerch (+20%) and Pheodosia (+41%).
