The Japan coast guard issued an alert to ships as North Korea banned vessels from passing through part of the Sea of Japan. The fresh navigation ban covers some 260 kilometres of the coastline northeast of Wonsan in the eastern part of North Korea and up to 100 km of the sea from the shore. The coast guard has received a warning issued by Pyongyang effective between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. from 10 to 30 June, Kyodo news agency reported.
Chief Cabinet secretary Mr Takeo Kawamura said Japan “cannot deny the possibility that (North Korea) will fire missiles, including ballistic missiles, in response to developments of the UN security council and other moves.” Mr Kawamura said Japan was hoping for a strong UN security council resolution that includes additional sanctions as well as urging North Korea to comply with Security Council Resolution 1718, which bans Pyongyang from pursuing nuclear or ballistic missile programmes.
USA to interdict
The USA is planning to interdict, possibly with China’s help, North Korean sea and air shipments suspected of carrying arms or nuclear technology, a media report said.
The reference to such action by Washington was made by secretary of State Mrs Hillary Clinton, The New York Times reported today.
