Throughput of Riga port up 2.2% to 12.2 mln t in Jan-May 09

In January-May 2009, the port of Riga handled 12.237 million tonnes of cargo (+2.2%, year-on-year), the port informs according to The Baltic Course.

Transshipment of dry cargo increased by 34.6% to 2.754 mln t, transshipment oil products amounted to 2.74 million tonnes (+35.3%).

In the reported period the port handled 7.959 million tonnes of dry loose cargo (+1.5%, year-on-year). Transshipment of coal amounted to 6.24 million tonnes (+11.7%), chemical cargo - 859,600 tonnes (+13.8%), woodchips — 211,600 tonnes (-43.3%), construction materials — 281,100 tonnes (-73.8%).

Turnover of general cargo fell by 26.9% to 1.524 million tonnes, containers — by 17.1% to 70,159 TEU.
In January-May the port serviced 185,495 passengers including 19,017 passengers of cruise liners.

Main types of cargo handled at the Freeport of Riga are containers, various metals, timber, coal, mineral fertilizers, chemical cargoes, oil and food products. In 2008, the port handled 29.565.90 million tonnes of cargo. of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS.
