China's ship industry revenues up 25.8% in Jan-May

Major enterprises in China's ship industry saw total revenues rise 25.8% from a year earlier to RMB 96.8 billion in the first five months of 2009. The growth rate was 38.9 percentage points lower compared with the same period of last year. The shipbuilding industry realized RMB 80 billion in revenue in the first five months of this year, up 35% compared with a year ago, while the ship repair and dismantling industry earned RMB 13.7 billion, down 5.6% year on year.
During the period from January to May, China's 1,791 major shipbuilding enterprises had a total industrial output value of RMB 203.3 billion, increasing 38.8% from a year earlier. The industrial output of the shipbuilding industry surged 45% to RMB 155.3 billion, while the industrial output of the ship repair and dismantling industry rose 8.7% to RMB 25.8 billion.
The total amount of shipbuilding surged 61% year on year to 12.16 million dead weight tons in the first five months of this year, while the number of new orders plunged 96% to 1.18 million dead weight tons.
China's ship orders in hand are adequate and will help the country's ship industry to weather the economic recession, an industry insider said.
