"The trading conditions for the carriers operating in these markets are still subject to unacceptable rate levels and the situation is unsustainable in the long term," the Danish ocean carrier said.
The increase applies from all origins in the Mediterranean and North Africa to all destinations in the United States and Canada and applies to both dry and reefer cargo, Maersk said.
Following a general rate increase announced in July, Maersk will raise freight rates between Northern Europe and the United States and Canada by $400 for a 20-foot equivalent unit and $500 for 40-foot equivalent units and 45 foot boxes effective Sept. 1.
Maersk, along with other carriers, said trans-Atlantic freight rates are at an unsustainable level and increases are necessary to continue to operate its services.
