S Gopalakrishna, traffic manager of NMPT, said the port witnessed growth in the handling of POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants) products, LPG, iron ore, fertiliser and limestone during April-August period.
The container traffic witnessed a growth of 12.05 percent during the period. The port handled 13,644 TEUs of containers during the first five months of the current fiscal against 12,176 TEUs in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
P Tamilvanan, chairman of NMPT, said the container traffic at the port is steadily increasing over the past four years. Considering the growth, the port will go ahead with the establishment of a container terminal at the port on BOT basis.
