Cargo vessel sinks off Philippines coast

Korean cargo ship MV Hera sank in rough waters off Philippines’ Eastern Samar province on Monday while transporting 5,805cubic meters of lumber to China’s Jangiagang Port. The vessel, owned by Dooyang Shipment Management, is reported to have taken in water when its hull cracked after being battered by strong winds and heavy rain.
All 19 crew members were rescued by a passing vessel and are reported to be unharmed by the incident. Local media are yet to report information regarding an oil spill.
The accident followed the sinking on Sunday of an interisland ferry, which carried 968 passengers and crewmen, off the Zamboanga Peninsula, writes the Philippines Enquirer. At least nine passengers drowned, 957 survived and two remained missing in the sinking of SuperFerry 9.
