Uralchem is considering a possibility to build a complex for production and transshipment of ammonia at the port of Taman (the Black Sea). The company has commenced elaborating of documents which should be approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the company says in its press release. The complex is supposed to produce over 800,000 t of ammonia per year and transship up to 2 mln t of the product.
According to the estimates of Uralchem, ammonia production in Russia is to gain 2.1 mln t by 2018 with the expansion of production capacity planned by a number of Russian companies. Up to 1.5 mln t can be additionally exported from Russian plants.
As of today, Russia has no terminals dedicated for ammonia transshipment. Russia exports ammonia via Estonia, Latvia and Ukraine today. In this context, the construction of a Black Sea terminal could contribute to the development of Russia’s chemical industry.
The schedule and the volume of investments are under consideration so far. The transshipment terminal can be valued at some RUB 5-6 bln without investments into a dedicated rolling stock and the development of rail infrastructure. As for the time period, the project implementation can take 4-5 years from the moment it is launched. The construction of similar production facilities usually takes 5-6 years with the investments of about $900 bln -$1.2 bln.
URALCHEM Group is the second largest ammonium nitrate producer in the world and number one in Russia and the second largest nitrogen fertilizer producer in Russia.
