The fleet of shipping company Maersk operating in the Baltic Sea switched over to low-sulphur fuel from January 1, 2015, Zsolt Katona, Russia Cluster Sales Manager at Maersk Line, told IAA PortNews.
“The Company has introduced Low sulphur surcharge to cover extra costs as this fuel is more expensive,” Zsolt Katona explained.
Restrictions of sulphur content in ship fuel coming into effect in the Baltic and North Seas (SECAs) from January 1, 2015 set a limit of 0.1%. Distillate fuel, LNG and scrubbers are among the alternatives.
Maersk Line is the world's largest container shipping company owing about 470 boxships and 1.9 mln containers. The network of the Company’s representative offices covers 125 countries.
