Murmansk Region agrees with the necessity to facilitate the development of coastal fishing and fish processing in coastal regions, press center of the regional government cites Murmansk Region Governor Marina Kovtun as saying following the State Council Presidium meeting on developing Russia’s fisheries industry chaired by RF President Vladimir Putin and held on October 19, 2015.

The meeting was focused on the methods to secure the right to use acuatic biological resources, on mechanisms to facilitate renovation of fishing fleet, develop coastal processing and enhance affordability of fish products for Russian people.

According to Vladimir Putin, the main aim of the meeting was to define measures that would help to ensure the domestic market is supplied with quality and affordable products. “We need to improve the legislation to make the sector work in the interests of Russia’s people”, the President said.

Marina Kovtun said the State Council Presidium meeting on developing Russia’s fisheries industry was the key event in the sector. The instructions that will be given by the President following the meeting will define the vectors of development for the coming years. “Murmansk Region agrees with the necessity to facilitate the development of coastal fishing and fish processing in coastal regions. This will let our companies feel confident and invest into the development while northern population will have high quality products at affordable prices”, Murmansk Region Government said.

According to her, impriovement of legislation and expansion of powers of the regional authorities is also important for the region both in terms of acuaculture development and for prevention of Kola environment damage.

Murmansk Region is the leading fishery area in the North-West region of Russia (accounts for some 60% of the entire catch in the Northern fishery basin). Annual catch of the region’s companies is 600,000-700,000 t of acuatic bioresources. Annual production of fish products  - 510,000-600,000 t. The results of 2015 are expected to exceed the catch of the previous year by 13,000 t.

The region’s fishing fleet numbers over 200 ships. Fleet modernization is underway in the region. The last two years saw the construction and commissioning of three new state-of-the-art fishing vessels, numerous vessels have undergone modernization.
