Introduction of Tier-III standard will increase ship owners’ costs by 40%, expert says (photo)

Introduction of the Tier-III standard for NOx emissions will increase ship owners’ operational costs by 25-40%, IAA PortNews journalist cites Cand.Sc. Lev Novikov, Chief Editor of the Scientific & Technical Journal “Engines Manufacturing”, as saying at the Conference on Baltic and North Sea NECA Roadmap.

He says there is no technology today to ensure reliable operation of engines in compliance with Tier-III standard in all modes of operation.

According to the IMO MARPOL Convention Annex VI, 80-pct reduction of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions from ships is required from January 1, 2016 in NOx Emission Control Areas (NECAs). As of today, NECAs are located in the North America and United States Caribbean Sea. NECA status of the Baltic and the North Seas is under consideration.
