Port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 1.39 million tonnes of cargo in 2M'18, up 29% Y-o-Y

Freight volume handled in the Port of Liepaja, Latvia in January-February 2018 climbed by 29%, year-on-year, to 1,385,200 tonnes, the Port Authority says.

In the reporting period, transshipment of grain grew by 51% to 51% - до 710,700 tonnes, construction materials – up 39% to 97,000 tonnes, timber – up 22% to 62,700 tonnes, oil products – up 46% to 84,700 tonnes. No crude oil was handled in the reporting period.

Container traffic fell by 22% to 400 TEUs, handling of Ro-Ro grew by 26% to 5,733 units.

The number of calls grew by 12% to 260, passenger traffic increased by 28% to 5,175 passengers.

Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90s of last century at the former Soviet Union’s naval base. Liepaja ranks third port of Latvia by handled cargo volume. Half of the port’s cargo throughput is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. In 2017, throughput of Liepaja port was 6.59 million tonnes.
