U.S. Jones Act carrier Horizon Lines is preparing the first of five new 2,824-TEU containerships to enter service on its Transpacific-1 (TP1) loop between the U.S. West Coast, Guam, Micronesia and Asia. The "Horizon Hawk" is one of five U.S.-flag sister ships being built at the Hyundai Mipo shipyard in South Korea that Horizon Lines has signed 12-year charter terms from Ship Finance International Ltd. The ship will depart Tacoma this weekend and make an inaugural sailing into Oakland before departing on its first transpacific journey. The Charlotte, N.C.-based carrier only serves the U.S./Guam trade on the TP1 and then hands over the capacity to Maersk Line to the Far East.
