Port of Riga Q1 throughput down 2.8% in Q1 07, y-o-y

In the first quarter of 2007 the port of Riga handled 5.81 million tons (-2.8%, year-on-year), RZD-Partner reports. The highest volume falls on loose dry cargo - 3.370 million tons (-7.6%, year-on-year), mainly coal - 2.302 million tons (-15.3%), chemical cargo (mineral fertilizers) - 461.3 thou tons (+24.6%).
Transshipment of general cargo totaled 1.278 million tons (+9.8%) including 702.2 thou tons of wood (+1.8%), 392.1 thou tons of containerized cargo (+2.4%). Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo amounted to 1.161 million tons (-0.5%) including 1.156 million tons of oil products (similar to the result of Q1 2006).

The highest results were demonstrated by stevedoring company Strek - 1.252 million tons (+20.2%), then comes Rigas centralais terminals: 1.078 million tons (-7.6%) and Alpha osta: 460.8 thou tons (+24.5%).

In January-March 2007 the port serviced 36 thou passengers (+845%, year-on-year). Vladimir Makarov, head of the port’s strategic development department, attributed the growth to a marketing company of Estonian shipping company Tallink Grupp. In 2006 the port of Riga handled 25.358 million tons of cargo (+3.8%, year-on-year).
