Modernization of Kiel-canal
The federal government will construct a new lock chamber for the Kiel-canal at Brunsbuettel (Germany), RZD-Partner reports.
On 20.03.2007 the minister of state Mr. Jörg Hennerkes announced the above decision.
After planning and preparation works it is scheduled to start with the newbuilding of this 5th lock chamber within 2009.
The target is to reduce possible restrictions in connection with the basic renovation of the two existing big lock chambers to a minimum.
The completion of the newbuilding is expected during 2013.
The renovation works of the other two big chambers should be completed during 2017.
According to first investigations the above described project is worth EURO 280 millions.
The above has to be seen in addition to the governments' decision of March 2006 to go ahead with the expansion of the eastern part of the Kiel-Canal worth EURO 130 millions.
The measures shall improve the attractiveness of the Kiel-Canal and meet the further growing demand, reports press-service of United Canal Agency GmbH.
