Throughput of Vostochny port up 2% in Q1 07, y-o-y

In January-March Vostochny port handled 4 559.5 thou tons of cargo (+2.03%, year-on-year), PortNews IAA learnt from Far East branch of Rosmorport FSUE. Over the reported period the port handled 736.7 thou tons of general cargo (+9.3%, year-on-year) including 709.0 thou tons of containerized cargo (+21.1%), 6.7 thou tons of metal scrap (-38%). Transshipment of machines and equipment grew 6-fold to 0.6 thou tons. In January-March transshipment of timber totaled 109.3 thou tons (+28.6%), bulk cargo–3696.0 thou tons (+0.4%), including 3 463.6 thou tons of coal and coke (+1.6%), 232.4 thou tons of potassium salt (-14.2%). Transshipment of loose dry cargo was not carried out in the port in January-March 2007. Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo amounted to 17.5 thou tons (in Q1 2006 transshipment of liquid bulk cargo was not carried out in the port).

Vostochny port is the deepest Far-Eastern port of Russia. It is located in the southern part of the Primorsky Krai on the shore of the Sea of Japan within 20 kilometers from Nakhodka – end point of Trans-Siberian Line. The port has year round navigation. The port is possible of handling vessels with a draft up to 15.5 meters, length up to 280 meters and breadth up to 40 meters. The port comprises 15 cargo berths, a number of auxiliary berths and a maintenance pier. Total length of the berthing line is about 4 kilometers. These berths are part of terminals used for transshipment of coal, containers, fertilizers, methanol, timber, bulk and general cargo.
