Transport to be navigated from space
Usage of satellite navigation was the main topic of International Forum devoted to satellite navigation. At the same time it is too early to speak about full scale implementation of satellite communication at the railway transport, experts say.
The forum was devoted to discussion of up to date technologies of satellite navigation, such as GLONASS, GPS and GALILEO systems. “It is important for Russian Federation to develop wholesale usage of satellite navigation. WE provide free access to the signals of Russian navigation system and we are interested in the development of it together with the other navigating systems”, Sergey Ivanov, Deputy Prime Minister of the RF, said. Satellite navigation is extremely important, as modern logistic system needs accuracy. Thus the defect is to be not 0.1 – 1 meters at the sea and river transport sector (while navigating at the water area and berthing) and 0.1-2 meters at the air transport sector ( while landing). Satellite technologies at the motor transport are discussed actively as well. Sergey Ivanov offered to equip each track with the special indicator, which will allow to monitor it. Experts say that such project needs too huge investments. Nowadays a safety system for the motor transport is being implemented. Jury Uraloch, Engineer in Chief of the RF Scientific Research Institute of Space Technologies, said that one of the possible measures is a blackbox, the similar to those, which are used at the planes. Such blackbox will fix the factors, which forced collision (speed, speed –up; power of a blow etc). It will also allow to set a placement of the vehicle before the collision. “It is possible that blackbox will reduce cost of insurance”, Jury Uraloch added. Disadvantages of GPS are the following: assurance the system depends on placement of satellite. Human factor was discussed as well. It is known that drivers, which do not want to be indicated, block the signal by wrapping the aerial by foil. Simle devices for block of the signal may be bought for $ 200. Alexey Makarov, representative of Geosystem Navigation company, said that there are two ways out: to use a hidden indicators or to develop a signal, which can not be blocked. Placement of satellite system at the railway transport causes more problems. The reasons are the following: cars and containers do not have source of energy supply, thus each transmission unit will need its autonomous source of energy supply or to reduce frequency of transmission. The other problem is safety from stealing, The third problem is safety of the system while servicing the wagons. There are three types of the transmission units being developed at the Geosystem Navigation company: the one with capacious battery; the one with solar battery and the one with seldom renovation of data. All in all the system is being implemented step-by-step: probation of those variants have taken place in Saint-Petersburg.
