Russian crewmen rescued from stranded ship

All the 17 Russian crew members of the ship Jane that ran aground off the coast of Japan have been rescued, a source at the Japanese department of maritime security told Itar-Tass.

A rescue operation involving two helicopters began at 7:30 Moscow time and finished just a few minutes ago.

The Jane flies the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The cargo ship loaded with coal left the Kholmsk port in Russia on April 10. It also carried 92 tons of diesel fuel and fuel oil onboard.

The ship’s captain decided to leave the port of Soma and take the ship into the open sea because a storm was approaching. Later, he discovered that water began filling the engine room. The captain decided to run the ship aground to avert a wreck.

No fuel leaks have been reported.
