Israeli ports reform 'a failure'
In a meeting with the Israel Shippers Council on Monday, heads of shipping companies said they were unhappy with the government's lack of response to inefficiency and vessle backlogs.
They called the ports reform a failure and expressed surprise that government ministries involved had not intervened to remedy the situation.
The Israel Shippers Council have officially called on the government for immediate action.
The council's president Reuven Zuk said much damage was being done to shipping companies and to the overall economy.
In response, Ashdod Port has said that figures for 2006 indicate that the port had met and exceeded the Ministry of Transport's expectations for container handling volume. Current problems have been blamed on unexpectedly heavy traffic.
