New container terminal is being built at Zabaikalsk

In 2007 construction of a new container terminal started at Zabaikalsk station of Zabaikalsk railway. The terminal’s design capacity is almost 550 large-capacity containers per day, the railway’s PR department reports. The value of the project totals RUR 700 million. The necessity to build a new container terminal was caused by growing volume of transportation. In 2006 the share of container transportation in total volume of import via Zabaikalsk was 36%, while in 2007 it grew to 48%. In the nearest future the growth of container transportation is forecasted to make 35% per year. Upon finalization of the terminal reconstruction it will be able to handle 200 thou containers per year. Today it is 15 thou (80 containers per day).
