St. Petersburg Nature Management Committee to open OSR point at the upper reaches of the Neva

St. Petersburg Committee on Nature Management, Environment Protection and Ecological Safety will open an Oil Spill Response control point at the upper reaches of the Neva-river at soon as the cargo transit navigation starts at Volga-Baltic waterway, PortNews IAA learnt from Igor Berezin, head of the department in charge of nature management activities. Round-the-clock observation of the vessels will be carried out from the on-shore premises. Besides, the Redut rescue vessel will be on permanent alert. According to Berezin, it will be the first OSR control point to be located before the draw-bridges. Earlier, all the points were placed downstream the Neva at the approaches to St. Petersburg. Berezin also told that Redut is a new modern vessel of OPR class able to leave the Neva if rescue activities are to be carried out in the sea or in the Ladoga lake.

 

The vessel is to fulfill the following tasks: placement of floating booms to localize oil spills at sea (within the coastal area of the Gulf of Finland) and at the Nava and Malaya Neva; elimination of oil spills, carry out activities within the oil spill, store collected oil products; application of sorbents; fire-prevention; supervision of localization and elimination of oil spill consequences. The vessel is registered with Russian River Register. The vessel is to operate in spring, summer and autumn with occasional deployment under ice-cake conditions. The vessel’s length is 28.6 meters; width – 6.9 meters; depth – 18 meters; draft when loaded for 6 days – 1.2 meters, displacement when fully loaded – 125.8 tons, height from a waterline up to the top cut of cabin – not exceeding 6.0 meters.
