APM to open Gulf hub port next year

APM Terminals, the terminal operating arm of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, will open the Khalifa bin Salman Port in Bahrain next year and expects it to become a hub for Upper Gulf cargo.
Ownership of the Khalifa bin Salman Port, along with the Mina Salman Port, has been handed over to APM in one of the largest privatisation projects in the region.
APM Terminals signed a 25-year concession for both ports last November, although the deal only narrowly won parliamentary approval.
Mina Salman Port is fully operational and was handed over to APM in December 2006.
The 25-year concession begins with the completion of construction of the Khalifa bin Salman Port, which is due to be operational towards the end of next year. The 900,000 m² port will be able to handle post-Panamax vessels.
