Lithuania proposes multimodal scheme to link Central Asia and Klaipeda

Lithuania proposes multimodal scheme for delivery of cargo from Central Asia to Klaipeda, press center of Lithuania’s Ministry of Communications reports according to RIA Novosti.  The idea is based on cooperation agreement signed between the port of Aktau (Kazakhstan) and the port of Klaipeda (Lithuania) on April 4, 2001, and on the fact that Kazakhstan is a member of TRACECA linking Kiev with Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenia, as well as with Kazakhstan (via the Caspian sea). Lithuania’s Ministry of Communications considers it reasonable to direct one run of TRACECA to the port of Klaipeda through application of modern multimodal technologies of cargo delivery.

The route proposed implies delivery of cargo from the port of Aktau (Kazakhstan, Caspian sea) by sea to the port of Baku and then by railway to the port of Poti or Batumi, and then to Odessa by vessels. Then the cargo may be delivered by existing route of Vikingas international train to Klaipeda and then to the states of Central and Northern Europe.
