Bintulu Port allocates RM400mil for capex
Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd has budgeted RM400mil in capital expenditure up to 2010 to fund Bintulu Port’s development projects and purchase of cargo handling equipment.
Chief executive officer Mior Ahmad Baiti Mior Lub Ahmad said RM120mil would be spent to upgrade the 950m multi-purpose wharf to cater to dry bulk cargo and bulk fertiliser.
“The proposed upgrading project will get off the ground soon for completion in 2009,” he said after the company AGM yesterday.
Mior Ahmad said new cargo yards and warehouse facilities would also be built. He said the container terminal would be expanded to increase the capacity by 250,000 TEUs (20-ft equivalent units) to 650,000 TEUs a year.
He said the port’s container volume jumped by 35% to 199,704 TEUs last year from 147,800 TEUs in 2005.
This growth rate, the highest among ports in Malaysia, has made Bintulu Port the No. 1 container port in Sabah and Sarawak.
Its ranking as a container port in Brunei/Indonesia/Malaysia/the Philippines-East Asean Growth Asea (BIMP-EAGA) has leapt to No. 4 from the fifth.
Mior Ahmad said Bintulu Port had forecast a 16% growth in container volume this year against 2006.
The port also plans to extend its palm oil bulking facility to enable it to handle 75,110 tonnes of palm oil at any time.
Mior Ahmad said RM60mil would be invested in additional and new cargo handling equipment.
