Turnover of Dutch shipbuilding industry reaches €3 billion
There are now more than a hundred shipyards in the Netherlands. Many of them are congregated, together with supply companies in the Rijnmond area, around Dordrecht and in Alblasserwaard. They are involved in the construction of new sea-going vessels, vessel repair, building of smaller boats and the building of large yachts.
The Dutch shipbuilding industry is particularly strong in niche markets at present. When it comes to the construction of dredgers, the Dutch (read IHC) account for 60 percent of the world market, tugs (read Damen Shipyards) 40 percent, coastal shipping (many shipyards in the North) 60 percent of the European market and inland shipping 80 percent of the European market. Turnover for the Dutch shipbuilding industry increased last year from €2.5 to 3 billion, a record.
The Dutch shipbuilding industry produced 230 sea-going vessels, ten smaller ships and twenty mega yachts. Turnover for the repair sector was up from 250 to 525 million Euros.
