Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said today that PTP, from handling only 418,000 TEUs in its first year of operation, in the first quarter of this year alone dealt with 1.6 million TEUs.
"If PTP sustains this momentum, I am confident it can manage 6.4 million TEUs for the whole year," he said when launching the second phase of PTP's development here, Monday.
Last year, Chan said, PTP coped with 4.8 million TEUs, accounting for 46 per cent of the 13.6 million TEUs handled by all the ports in Malaysia.
"PTP has joined the world league of container ports and is now in the group of top 20 ports of the world. I congratulate PTP and its management which has worked diligently in achieving this," he said.
Chan urged the PTP staff to not only maintain but strengthen the port's performance in view of the intense global competition in the port industry.
"I understand PTP has set a vision to become the region's port of choice. Looking at its performance and achievements, I am confident that PTP can realise this vision," he added.
According to the minister, PTP's strategic location is one of its important features, assuring that it remains a top competitive, cost-effective transshipment hub in the country.
PTP can cater to the latest generation of container vessels which have a capacity to transport 11,000 TEUs, he added.
