Port of Odessa (Ukraine) to start construction of container terminal before 2009

Commercial Seaport of Odessa plans to start the project on construction of a container terminal in 2008, delo.ua reports. As Yuri Vaskov, the port’s deputy head told at international conference "Black Sea Freight Market & Ports"held in Odessa it is necessary to reclaim 19 hectares and to build 600-meter long quay. The project’s value is 300 million dollars. The construction is to be financed by a private investor, which is then to get a license to operate the terminal.Vaskov says necessary documents are under development. It is to be completed by the end of the current year and the construction works will start. The terminal’s design capacity is 600,000 ТЕU. Today the port is capable of handling 450,000 TEU per year.Besides, the port is to put a “dry port” into operation in June 2007. The complex for container transshipment is being built outside the city. The complex’s storage capacity is 16,000 TEU. It is linked with transport hubs, existing container terminal and will be later linked with a yet-to-be-built terminal at Karantinny Mol.Commercial Seaport of Odessa plans implementation of 8 investment projects aimed for $1.5 billion before 2011.

In 2006, Commercial Seaport of Odessa increased cargo handling by 4.3%, year-on-year, to 28.01 million tons. By 2008, it plans to increase it to 35 million tons per year.
