In January-May 2007, throughput of the port of Caucasus totaled 2.259 million tones, PortNews IAA learnt from Taman branch of Rosmorport FSUE. In the 5-month period, transshipment of export cargo amounted to 816.98 thou tonnes (+97.4%, year-on-year), while import decreased by 14.5% to 368.75 thou tonnes. In the reported period the port handled 55.32 thou tonnes of fertilizers and 510.48 thou tonnes of general cargo. Transshipment of oil products totaled 1.478.42 million tonnes. Off-harbor transshipment grew 3.4-fold to 1.073.27 million tonnes. In January-May the port handled 759 vessels (+15.7%, year-on-year). The port of Caucasus is situated at the border of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov at Kerch Strait from the side of Russia. The port of Caucasus is ice-free, so it has the ability to handle both river vessels (draft of up to 5 meters) and sea vessels (off-harbor handling of vessels with a draft of up to 11 meters). The territory of the port is crossed by a 2600-meter long railway line. The port handles loose cargo, general cargo and timber at the berths and oil products off the harbor.
