In January-May 2007, throughput of the port of St. Petersburg grew 16%, year-on-year, to 23.090.5 million tonnes, Administration of St. Petersburg Seaport reports. In the reported period, the port handled 3.624 million tonnes of bulk cargo (+67%, year-on-year) including 319.6 thou tonnes of ore (+18%), 2.288.7 million tonnes of mineral fertilizers (+40%), 1.015.7 million tonnes of coal and coke (3.9-fold increase against January-May 2006). In the 5-month period the port handled 243.0 thou tonnes of loose dry cargo (grain), (+38%). Transshipment of timber made 1.081.2 million tonnes (-17%), general cargo – 6.173.2 million tonnes (+4%) including 640.4 thou tonnes of ferrous metal (-6%), 1.039.3 million tonnes of non-ferrous metal (-3%), 170.6 thou tonnes of metal scrap (+18%). Transshipment of packaged cargo totaled 1.646.7 million tonnes (+14%), refrigerated cargo - 810.8 thou tonnes (+30%), other general cargo – 6.885.5 million tonnes (+20%). Transshipment of containerized cargo grew by 9% to 680.815 thou tonnes (5,083.5 teus). Transshipment of oil products totaled 5.082.4 million tonnes (+10%).Number of calls amounted in January-May 2007 to 8,218 vessels. Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of St. Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the Neva Bay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting St. Petersburg from flood (the dam). Icebreaker assistance is carried out within winter navigation.
In 2005 the port’s cargo turnover amounted to 4282.2 thou tons. According to the Administration of the Sea Port of St. Petersburg, about 30 stevedoring companies are engaged in transshipment of cargo in the port.
