Marine Ecology performs oil spill response activities in the port of Ust-Luga

Marine Ecology LLC, one of the leaders at the regional market of environmental services (St. Petersburg) has performed oil spill response activities in the harbor waters of the port of Ust-Luga (Leningrad region) at the berth of Ust-Luga fish-works,the company’s press release states. The activities resulted in collecting 20 tonnes of oily mixture containing some 80% of oil products (initially identified as diesel fuel). About 3 tonnes of the 50-percent oily mixture was collected from the harbor waters, the rest was pumped out of the vessel’s oil holds.

The order was received by the company from Ust-Luga branch of Rosmorport FSUE at 18.30 Moscow time, June 22, 2007. The situation was caused by cutting of the hull for scraping when fuel leaked out of the vessel, which resulted in pollution of harbor waters of the Gulf of Finland. At 23.00 the equipment of Marine Ecology LLC (vacuum machine and skimmer) as well as the rescue team were delivered to the site. By that time, the slick had been already localized by booms. Response activities were finalized by 18.00, Moscow time, June 23, 2007. The information on the operations was provided to Russia’s nature supervision watchdog RosPrirodNadzor.

Marine Ecology LLC has been operating at the market of environmental services from 1999. The company’s staff numbers 16 rescuers and 10 specialists in spill response activities. The company’s ecological fleet numbers 16 units ensuring simultaneous sanitation and cleaning servicing of St. Petersburg harbor waters, emergency alert and oil spill response activities.
