New berth for the handling of heavy and cumbersome cargo opens in the port of Rostock

Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock is bringing the expansion of the cross quay Berth 10 at the seaport to a close this week. The new berth is located along the south side of port basin C and is equipped to handle cargo up to five tonnes per square meter.
The new quay facility is intended for cargo handling and is especially well suited for the handling of heavy and unwieldy cargo. Berth 10 is capable of accommodating ships with a length of up to 130 meters and a draft of approximately seven meters for the loading and unloading of cargo. This quay facility is equipped with crane rails and encompasses an area of around 5,000 square meters (190 m long, 26 m wide).

The construction of Berth 10 began in November 2006 and entailed costs of 2.5 million Euros. A new road was constructed to connect the cross quay with the main road-traffic artery of the seaport, Ost-West-Stra?e. Among the intended uses at Berth 10 is the loading of large pipes of up to 100 meters in length and a diameter of seven meters. The company EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH, a subsidiary company of Erndtebrucker Eisenwerke of North Rhine -Westphalia, has already begun construction of a facility for the production of large pipes on a site of 50,000 square meters south of Berth 10. The official celebration for the laying of the foundation stone at the facility is scheduled to take place on 29 June 2007. According to EEW, the plant is to be put into operation in spring 2008.
