Chosen as the UN's English-speaking partner in providing training to ports in developing countries, DPC will deliver the UN's TrainForTrade Training Programme, said news reports.
The three-day UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) which began yesterday in Dublin Castle will detail an international training and partnership network of English-speaking port communities in developing countries.
“Maritme transport and port services are vital for the economies of countries and have considerable influence on the volume and conditions of trade,” said a spokesperson for the UNCTD.
The UNCTAD meet, supported by DPC in association with Irish Aid, is seeing attendance by delegates from over 20 countries from Asia and Africa including Ghana, Sierra Leone, Benin, the Maldives, Namibia, India and Cambodia.
Reports say that requests for assistance from English-language countries are coming on the back on successful UNCTAD projects for African French-speaking and Portuguese-speaking port communities.
Over 500 port operators, 17% of them women, have been trained in Algeria, Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Senegal, Togo and Tunisia.
About 22 “training of trainer” sessions have been successfully organized in these countries, and the participants are now serving as trainers in their port communities.
