Hosco (China) orders three bulkers
Hebei Ocean Shipping, the third largest shipping company by tonnage in China, has ordered three 57,000 dwt bulk carriers from Cosco Zhoushan Shipyard, boosting the its spending on vessel purchases to $1.4bn this year, writes Sandra Tsui in Hong Kong.
The three supramaxes are due to be delivered in the second half of 2009, said chairman Gao Yanming.
Mr Gao declined to disclose the unit price of the newbuildings, but said this order had boosted the group’s total spending on newbuilding orders and purchases of secondhand vessels to $1.4bn this year.
Hosco made a massive $1.1bn investment in 16 new capesize bulk carriers last month. The vessels will be built by China Shipbuilding Industry Corp and delivered between 2009 and 2011.
The group also bought three very large crude carriers earlier this year, including the 1993-built, 244,275 dwt Tataki for $42m, the 1990-built, 243,850 dwt Ruby III for $41m and another vessel which will join the Hosco fleet later this year. Hosco now owns a fleet of 32 ships, with a total tonnage of 4.64m dwt.
