China ports post 20pc increase in container volume in 2007

Chinese Minister of Communications Li Shenglin said container throughput of mainland's ports rose 20.4 per cent year on year to 112.7 million TEU and overall tonnage rose 15.1 per cent to 6.41 billion tons in 2007.
Xinhua News Agency reported that China has the most ports in the world with throughputs exceeding 100 million tons, and the number of such ports grew from 12 in 2006 to 14 last year.
Mr Li said there are currently 1,400 ports with over 35,000 berths in operation in China. Seaports have about 5,000 berths, which can handle 61.5 million TEU or 3.4 billion tons every year, accounting for 90 per cent of China's foreign trade.
