Cargo transportation in Russia grew by 8.8% y-o-y to 2.5 billion tons in the first nine months of 2006, Alexander Misharin, deputy Minister of transport reports according to the Ministry’s press release. Nearly half of the total volume - 1 billion tons falls at railway transportation. The share of railway transport in commercial cargo turnover of Russia’s transport industry is 80%, while its share in total volume of passenger transportation is 44 %.
According to Misharin, decrease of logistics expense is one of key instruments to raise competitive capacity. In order to enter into competition at world markets of transport services it is necessary to develop new branch of Russian economy with sales volumes comparable to that of weapon and energy export. “Russia needs logistic reengineering with introduction of integrated supply chains”, deputy Minister underlined.
