Deutsche Bahn plans Beijing-Hamburg container rail service

Deutsche Bahn (DB), a German railway enterprise, will open round-trip train to Asia for cargo transportation per week in 2010, says chairman Hartmut Mehdorn.
The group launches a 700-m express train transporting containers from Beijing city in China to Hamburg Port in Germany for trial operation in January. The train has completed a 10,000-km journey and arrived in Germany via Mongolia, Russia, the Republic of Belarus and Poland in 15 days.
The transportation time is only half of maritime transportation. A modern container carrier can ship about 10,000 TEU each time but the train can only carry 89 TEU. However, the transportation cost by rail is still lower than the cost of maritime transportation and air transportation.
