Shanghai International's throughput up 23.2pc in Q3

Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) has announced that during the third quarter, ending September 30, 2006, the group's container throughput over the period amounted to 5.88 million TEU, an increase of 23.2 per cent over the same period a year ago. The company achieved a third quarter consolidated net profit of CNY847 million (US$107.54 million), and revenue of CNY3.34 billion from the group's core business, Xinhua News Agency reported. During the third quarter, cargo throughput rose 17.9 per cent to 79.3 million tons. Within this total, foreign cargo rose 20.6 per cent over the comparable period last year to 51.2 tons.
In the first nine months of the year, the group's aggregate container throughput grew 19.8 per cent year on year to 15.96 million TEU. Meanwhile, cargo volumes rose 11.6 per cent to 223 million tons, with foreign trade accounting for 141 million tons of cargo, an increase of 13.8 per cent over January to September 2005. The news agency added that SIPG's total box throughput will grow at a rate of 19 per cent for the whole of 2006.
