Cargo turnover of Mariupol Commercial Seaport up 10.3% in 9M06

Cargo turnover of Mariupol Commercial Seaport (Ukraine) amounted to 11.856 million tons in January-September 2006 (+10.3% or +1102.4 against year-on-year result), State Department of Sea and River Transport of Ukrainian Transport Ministry reports according to RZD-Partner. Mariupol Commercial Seaport specializes in dry cargo handling. It is Ukraine’s second largest port in terms of dry cargo handling after Yuzhny port.  Thus, the result of Mariupol Commercial Seaport is less than that of Yuzhny port by 149 thou tons. One month earlier Yuzhny port was 662 thou tons ahead of Mariupol port, two years ago this difference was 852 thou tons, three years ago the difference between the ports’ half-year results amounted to 893 thou tons. Export transshipment of Mariupol Commercial Seaport amounted over the reported period to 8.973 million tons (+8.8% against year-on-year result) – the highest result among Ukraine’s four leading ports including Odessa, Iljichevsk and Yuzhny). In 2005, the port’s dynamics was the similar to this result - +17.1%.

Export of ferrous metals continue to grow: in 9M05 - +26.2%; in 9M06 - +26% to 5.58 million tons, including 1 million tons growth in export of rolled metal products. Export of graing is growing as well: in 9M05 - +102%; in 9M06 - +37% to 0.37 million tons). However, coal export continue to decrease (in 9M05 - -12.1%; in 9M06 - -34% to 0.98 million tons). Export shipment of high-quality clay has decreased over the reported period by 5.3% to 1.99 million tons while a year before it grew by +26% against year-on-year result.

Cargo transit grew by 6% y-o-y to 2.445 million tons. In 2005, transit fell by 30.2% against year-on-year result. First of all, the port managed to raise coal transit (in 9M05 the dynamics was -27%; this year it is +26% to 1.77 million tons); transit transshipment of metal cargo has also increased over the reported period. However, the tendency of sulfur decrease has been similar to that of 2005 (-35% in 2005 and -37% in 2006 to 0.52 million tons).
