Expansion at Dandong, which has recently become a key port for exports from Northeast China, includes the construction of a new harbour that may come on-line by end-2010.
The expansion programme will boost the number of berths at Dandong to 60 large deep-water berths from the current 20 over the next three to five years.
The port currently also has a large shipyard and eight kilometres of a deep-water coastline, which is slated to be expanded to 15 kilometres.
According to the Dandong Municipal Information Centre, the port's handling capacity should rise to 15 million tonnes per year by 2020.
Construction work has already begun for a ro/ro facility, two container berths, a cement carrier berth and another shipyard, all of which are expected to be completed by 2010, according to a NewsTrak report.
Dandong currently offers general/bulk cargo, container and passenger transport services. The current stable of liners servicing Dandong provides direct links with more than 70 global ports. Global ports with strong commercial links with Dandong include Japan, the two Koreas, Russia and Hong Kong.
Dandong port is situated on the right bank of the Yalu River mouth in the southeast of the Liaodong Peninsula on the northernmost point of China's coastline.
The port provides a convenient sea passage for foreign and domestic trade development in Northeast China radiating from the Yalu River valley.
