Oil spill in Amur River near terminal in Russian Far East

The Amur River has suffered another oil spill in the Khabarovsk Territory in Russia's Far East, the Russian Natural Resources Ministry said Wednesday, RIA Novosti reports.

"The pollution was discovered November 8 at 13:00 local time near an oil terminal of the Khabarovsk thermal and electric power plant. The area of contamination, the volume of oil and the source of the spill are being established," the ministry said.

This is not the first time the Amur has been contaminated. An oil slick was discovered in October at the confluence of a small river and the Amur in Khabarovsk. Some 400 kilograms (3 barrels) of oil were believed to have spilled into the river. Some 50 large and small enterprises working with petroleum derivatives are located near the oil slick.
