Mozambique’s Beira Port needs to invest US$37 million in dredging

Mozambican port and railway management company Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) needs to invest US$37 million on dredging the entrance to the port of Beira, company officials said.
Dredging work, according to CFM, is "absolutely necessary" to allow movement of ships in the near future and particularly when coal from Moatize begins to be exported via the port.
According to the same source dredging work will be funded by the Netherlands and Denmark.
Brazil’s Companhia do Vale do Rio Doce plans to export 20 million tons of coal per year via the port of Beira.
The rehabilitation of the Sena railroad estimated to cost US$170 million is due to be concluded in 2009 allowing for the movement of goods from the interior of Mozambique to the port of Beira.
A further set of refurbishments has been outlined for the port costing an estimated US$40 million.
