Foreign trade of Sakhalin region up 7 times to $2.342 billion in Q1 08

According to the customs statistics, foreign trade turnover of Sakhalin region surged by 7 times to $2.342 billion in the first quarter of 2008. Import accounts for 9%, export – 91%. Over 3.028 million tonnes of different cargo crossed the border with 97% of cargo falling on cargo transported by operators of off-shore projects.

Foreign trade activities were carried out with 63 countries including Japan ($1.136 billion), Korea Republic ($1.34 billion), USA ($58 million), Great Britain ($30 million), Germany ($12 million), China ($11 million).

In the reported period Export totaled $2.139 billion (up 14 times, year-on-year). In monetary terms: hydrocarbons accounted for 97.8%, sea products – 0.16%, timber material – 0.24%, scrap metal – 0.14% etc.

Import accounted for $203 million (+9%, year-on-year) including metal and metal goods ($39 million), products of chemical industry ($19 million), mineral products ($8 million) and fuek and energy goods ($6 million) etc.
