The RTGs will be deployed at PSA's new berths at Pasir Panjang Terminal (PPT) and will help Singapore's dominant port operator cater to growing volumes from shipping line customers calling at its terminals.
With an eye towards rising oil costs going forward, they are also the first batch of RTGs that will be delivered equipped with energy-saving devices to help reduce fuel use.
At the contract signing yesterday, PSA's chief executive officer for South-east Asia and Singapore Terminals Kuah Boon Wee said: 'PSA Singapore Terminals has seen steady growth of 12.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2008, year-on-year. We will continue to invest in world-class port facilities and equipment to ensure that we retain our value as an attractive hub port of choice to the shipping lines.'
Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction executive vice-president Park Kyung-Ho said: 'Doosan is pleased to partner PSA Singapore Terminals on the supply of cranes. The RTGs have been customised to PSA's specifications which include fuel consumption conservation, thereby safeguarding the environment.'
Doosan said that it is confident of being on track in supplying the cranes on time for the development of the new berths within the next two years.
