The higher volume of external trade, particularly of imports, had been instrumental in giving a fillip to the performance of the premier port of the country, he added.
In the first three months of 2008, a total of 3,23,328 TEUs were handled at the Karachi Port Trust. In the January 2008, 1,02,000 TEUs, in February 2008, 1,08,000 TEUs and in the month of March 2008, a record handling of 1,13,328 was done. Similarly, he said that a record handling of rock phosphate is also recorded on 12 April. In 24 hours, 1,8250 metric tonnes rock phosphate was handled by breaking the previous record of 11,275 in the year 2006. This record was made when ship Maria anchored on berth number 2 and 3 on east wharf.
Karachi Port handles over 70 percent of total trade volume of the country and had embarked upon creating more capacity by deepening its berths and approach channels to handle large size vessels. Recently, Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping, Naveed Qamar, has announced that new berths and terminals have been planned to build up at the existing ports to enhance capacity by next year.
