Transnet to invest US$1.8 billion in South Africa on box terminals

Transnet is expected to select the location for its new container terminal with an annual handling capacity of more than six million TEU.
Moira Moses, a Transnet executive, said the company was doing feasibility studies for the expansion of container handling facilities at Bayhead in the Durban port, and at the ports of Ngqura in the Eastern Cape, and at Richards Bay in northern KwaZulu-Natal, a report by the South Africa Business Report said.
"From a planning perspective the board will need to make a decision where the next big container facility will be by the end of the calendar year," said Ms Moses.
Phase one of this terminal is scheduled to begin operations by 2014 and will have an annual box handling capacity of 3.1 million TEU. This is higher than the current capacity at the Durban port, which handles more than two-thirds of South Africa's container cargo.
Transnet expects to spend ZAR15 billion (US$1.89 billion) on container handling capacity by 2012, the report said, including the financing of work already done at the Durban container terminal, Pier 1, and the Point multipurpose-terminal also at the Durban harbour. Work is also underway at the Ngqura container terminal. The first phase will be operating next year.
The company is also spending ZAR4.2 billion to raise capacity at the Cape Town container terminal from 800,000 TEU to 1.4 million TEU. The company's plan is based on 15 per cent annual growth.
Krish Reddy, a general manager of group planning at Transnet, added: "Our plans provide adequate capacity to meet medium growth container demand up to 2014."
