Container lines in the northern Europe to Asia trades will be "more selective" about cargo they will carry back to Asia to reduce costs, says the Far Eastern Freight Conference (FEFC).
Rather than taking cargo that pays low rates, reports Lloyds List, FEFC members will focus on profitability and will increase rates from northern Europe from June 1.
At the low end, the tariff rate per TEU loaded with basic commodities or spot cargo will increase from US$100 to $200 upon which will be added surcharges covering currency and bunker costs as well as terminal handling fees.
For waste paper and plastics, the rate per TEU will rise from $250 to $350. But chilled cargo rates will be lowered to $1,600 from $1,700 though tariffs for deep frozen cargo will rise.
In addition, the FEFC intends to implement a peak season surcharge of $158 per TEU between June 1 and October 17 on cargo moving from Asia to the Mediterranean, the report added.
