"This has posed a big challenge to Fujairah Civil Defence."
He was speaking at an 'Oil Industry Fire Safety Forum' in Fujairah, organised by ENOC, VOPAK-Horizon Fujairah Limited (VHFL), the Fujairah Civil Defence and the Fire Safety engineering College in Oman.
Saif Humaid Al Falasi, ENOC Group General Manager, said industrial growth in Fujairah and the UAE called for better preparedness in dealing with major fires.
"Fire incidents can have catastrophic consequences on people, environment, oil companies and the economy," said Al Falasi.
The forum proposed that a technical committee to study incidents in oil facilities around the world and set up a mechanism for the Fujairah Civil Defence to verify and approve safety measures and emergency response plans for projects in Fujairah.
Other recommendations from the forum include oil companies in Fujairah providing Civil Defence with their emergency plans and an assessment of their operational risks.
Vopak Horizon Fujairah Limited is a joint venture between the ENOC Group, Royal Vopak, the Government of Fujairah, Kuwait's Independent Petroleum Group and the Vitol Group.
It recently added 380,000 cubic metres (m³) of capacity to the storage capacity to its Fujairah terminal and has plans to expand capacity 2.7 million m³.
Chemoil Energy and Gulf Petrol Supplies LLC are building a 326,000 cubic metre (m³) storage terminal in the UAE port.
The increase in land-based storage has run parallel with moves to run down the use of floating storage for bunker product.
ENOC is the wholly-owned energy company of the Government of Dubai and operates in the downstream and upstream sectors of the oil and gas industry.
