International container transportation by Russian railways up 1.3 times to 822,000 TEU in 2007

In 2007, the volume of international container transportation by Russian railways totaled 822,000 TEU (up 1.3 times, year-on-year), first vice-President of Russian Railways Vadim Morozov told at International Transport and Logistics Conference TRANSRUSSIA 2008. The volume of transit transportation grew from 96,000 TEU to 125,000 TEU, import – from 230,000 TEU to 351,000 TEU, export – from 318,000 TEU to 346,000 TEU.
According to Vadim Morozov, the growth of container flow should be attributed to improvement of services (introduction of block-train transportation technology, one-stop principle for transportation of large batches of similar goods, as well as electronic tracking of cargo from the Far East ports to the western borders of the Russian Federation. Vadim Morozov also said the advantage of railway transportation from East Asia to Europe is in its delivery time which makes 18-19 days (while that by sea via Suez Canal is twice as long). RZD thinks it is necessary to develop cooperation between the participants of the transport chain to increase container turnover. There are two ways of such a development for RZD – to enter authorized capital of the key ports in the North West, South and Far East of Russia a and to establish managing companies for joint implementation of investment projects.
