Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Industries, Production and Privatisation Syed Naveed Qamar who Saturday visited Port Qasim was told by Chairman Port Qasim Authority Rear Admiral (retd) Syed Afzal that in year 2007-08, PQA achieved record cargo handling of 24.4 million tons, registering growth of 13 percent over previous year.
For capacity enhancement, ten private sector projects are being implemented as against three in last 24 years. On completion of these projects by 2010, PQA handling capacity shall increase to 82 million tons, showing increase of 164 percent, number of berths will increase from ten to twenty.
PQA is striving for deepening navigation channel to attract major shipping lines to call at port. He was told 30 wheat ships have been handled at port and total of 1.2 million tons wheat was handled so far, average wheat handling was more than 7400 tons per day. Minister lauded PQAs role in meeting sea borne trade requirements of economy.
