Yantai christens world's largest gantry

The world's first fixed dual-beam gantry crane was officially launched at a naming ceremony held at Yantai Raffles Shipyard last Saturday.  Named after a famous sacred mountain in China's Shandong Province, the 20,000-tonne (22,000 tons) Taisun was also presented a certificate by the American Bureau of Shipping for lifting a 20,133-tonne (22,146-ton) launch barge over the weekend, setting a new heavy lift world record.
The use of the crane to lift sections will reduce up to 2 million man-hours spent on each project and improve safety and quality of the work done on large offshore projects.  Taisun will perform at least nine lifts over the next 24 months to assist the construction of semisubmersible rigs and floating production storage offloading vessels over the next 24 months.
The crane will begin its commercial operations lifting 10 deckboxes of over 10,000 tonnes (11,000 tons) for the construction of Awilco Offshore's semisubmersible, WilPioneer.  WilPioneer is scheduled for delivery towards end of this year.  Yantai is expected to deliver two more semisubmersibles, WilInnovator and WilPromoter, to Awilco in the second quarter and fourth quarter of 2009.
